Sir,

Hongkong, 1st June, 1842.

I beg to acknowledge your letter of this day's date on the subject of the Salary of the Barrack-Master. I am directed by His Excellency Sir Henry Pottinger to inform you, that he considers it to be entirely a Military appointment, it being so considered in India; and to the Regulation of that country His Excellency conceives every thing here should be as far as possible assimilated. He, however, begs to suggest that Lieut: Ouchterlony should be paid the sum that you originally proposed, and

Major General Burrell, C.B.
